Prayers for Competitive Cubicles | Let Us Catch Our Breath

Prayers for Competitive Cubicles are petitions for those trying to be salt, leaven, and light at work when clearly ambition and antagonism are being encouraged and rewarded.

Heavenly Father, You are the Origin and Foundation of All Things. By Your Word, You set plates inside the earth. Blocks stay piled because of Your natural laws. Muscles grow by Your design. Steps remain in place after being built because of Your ordinances. You are the Ground of All, and all things are upheld by You.

Today, we small creatures need You to lift us up, for we are worn out. We are drooping. Matted like old carpet by the monotonous ever-presence of menial and mundane tasks. The packing of lunches gets us. The getting there on time stresses us. The sense of obligation to respond to every email and voicemail frustrates us. We feel burdened, flattened.

And to top it off, we feel the eyes on our back. Our coworkers grin and bask in our deficit. It’s almost as if they can see it weighing down on us and they capitalize on it. Let me take care of that for you (you poor thing). The condescension is palpable. It’s hard not to see their assistance as self-satisfaction, virtue signaling, or a scheme to garner future favors.

We long for a break, a respite, an exhalation. From the oppression. From the cynicism. From the weakness.

Spirit of Life, will you give us a moment to catch our breath? Or if not, infuse us with everlasting  life? Or, if you mean for us to learn patience and cultivate endurance, will you give us the fortitude and resilience to not despair or grow despondent in times of adversity?

Give us strength, O’ Rock of Ages. We need it. Help us see our week and our work from Your vantage point. Sweeten our perspective. Help us to brush off the gazes of judgment from our peers. Infuse us with your joy when difficulty, temptation, and suffering come our way. Lift up our eyes to the Mountain so that we may see You, our Help, coming.

So be it.
